for their families partners and friends.
- Medical care, in addition to the examination facility / medical / legal
requirements necessary to their victim exercising their rights under
all.
- Support and Information regarding medical and legal process.
- Free Confidential Crisis Counselling Service.
- Community Education Programs directed to breaking down the myths
surrounding sexual assault.
- Education for professional groups.
- Research on the incidence and prevention of sexual assault.
- Information about sexual assault.
- Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) information and
assistance with victim's of crime compensation applications
- Library books and articles, videos, pamphlets, for all age groups.
- Support Groups
- Self Defence Classes.
- Advocacy / Referrals
- Consultation and Support for all persons
professionals and agencies about disclosures and mandatory reporting etc.
Philosophy
of the of Mallee Sexual Assault Unit is based on the understanding that:
- It is not the fault of the person assaulted.
- No one has the right to sexually assault another person.
- Sexual assault is an act of violence.
- Sexual assault is a violation of basic human rights and therefore is a
crime against the individual and society.
- Sexual assault has social, emotional, medical, political and legal
consequences, each of which must be responded to appropriately.
Sexual Assault is a major social problem for which the community as a
whole must take responsibility.
FACTS NOT
MYTHS:
The fact is:
- Sexual assault can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, culture,
class, disability; however, it mainly happens to women and children.
- Most victims / survivors know their attacker in some way.
- Most sexual assaults are premeditated and well planned.
- Most offenders look and act like ordinary people.
- Offenders come from all social classes, income levels, races and age
groups.
- Sexual potency or sexual preference does not affect
a persons ability to
rape.
- Sexual assault in marriage is common.
- Some women are sexually assaulted by men whom they had
seen as
protectors; father, husband, boyfriend.
- Victims / survivors of sexual assault can become stronger, more self
respecting and aware.
- We all have the right to feel safe all the time.
- There's nothing so awful that we can't talk with someone about it
